All grant recipients must commit to a volunteer project before being approved. Projects may be completed prior to hiking the PCT or while on the trail. Here are some examples of acceptable projects, but applicants may propose projects not on this list.

Update FarOut with trail issues along the way to assist with trail maintenance and other hiker issues.

Leave No Trace education piece
A short guide, infographic, zine, or social media mini-series translating LNT principles specifically for long-distance hikers on the PCT.

Trail safety/preparedness resource
A simple educational handout, checklist, or visual guide for new hikers on topics like water carries, weather preparedness, wildlife interactions, or minimizing search-and-rescue risk.

Conservation awareness project
A short article, poster series, or digital resource explaining one environmental challenge affecting the PCT, such as wildfire recovery, alpine ecosystem fragility, invasive species, or trail erosion.

Accessible outdoors resource
A beginner-friendly guide aimed at helping underrepresented or first-time backpackers understand how to prepare for multi-day hiking responsibly and affordably.

Public education photo essay
A curated photo/story project highlighting stewardship themes on the PCT, such as responsible camping, restoration areas, or the impact of climate and wildfire on trail landscapes.

Trail stewardship reflection toolkit
A short educational packet or presentation encouraging hikers to think about reciprocity in outdoor spaces — for example, how to give back through volunteer trail work, local conservation groups, or community education.

Youth or campus outreach presentation
A short presentation that applicants could give after their trip to a school, outdoor club, or community group about stewardship, conservation, and responsible recreation on the PCT.

“Know Before You Go” educational materials
A concise one-pager or slide deck for aspiring hikers covering permits, respectful trail use, waste disposal, campsite selection, and protection of sensitive areas.
